The Church has NO Spare Parts
"Now you are the body of Christ, and individually members of it."
1 Corinthians 12:27
In December 2008, just one month before my brain surgery, I began having severe pain that shot through my chest and into my back.
My doctor ordered an ultrasound, and the problem became obvious.
Gallstones.
Lots of them.
Within a week, I was having surgery to remove my gallbladder.
Afterward, my surgeon explained something I had never really thought about before.
"Your gallbladder is one of those organs you can live without."
Of course, he said, my body would function better with it than without it.
But if necessary...
I'd survive.
For some reason, that conversation came back to me years later while reading 1 Corinthians 12.
Because when Paul describes the body of Christ...
there are no gallbladders.
Every Part Matters
Paul paints a beautiful picture of the Church.
One body.
Many parts.
Different gifts.
Different callings.
Different responsibilities.
Yet every single believer is essential.
No one is unnecessary.
No one is expendable.
No one exists merely as an extra part the body could function without.
Paul writes,
"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them... There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord." (1 Corinthians 12:4–5)
God never intended for every believer to serve in exactly the same way.
He designed diversity within unity.
Not uniformity.
When Differences Become Division
Some of the deepest wounds within the Church don't come from outside opposition.
They come from inside criticism.
We naturally gravitate toward people who worship like we do.
Serve like we do.
Parent like we do.
Study Scripture like we do.
And before long, it becomes easy to assume our preferences are the only faithful way to follow Christ.
Now, let's be clear.
There are foundational doctrines that Christians must never compromise—truths like the deity of Christ, His bodily resurrection, and salvation by grace through faith.
Those are non-negotiable.
But many of the disagreements that divide believers aren't about essential doctrine.
They're about preferences.
Methods.
Traditions.
Styles.
Personal convictions.
And those differences were never meant to become reasons for division.
God Loves Variety
Imagine if every believer had exactly the same gift.
What if every Christian were a preacher?
Who would quietly serve behind the scenes?
Who would encourage the discouraged?
Who would show hospitality?
Who would organize?
Who would give generously?
Who would disciple children?
Who would take the gospel to places the rest of us will never see?
God's kingdom advances because He distributes His gifts differently.
The diversity isn't a flaw in His design.
It's the beauty of it.
Protecting the Unity Christ Died For
Proverbs tells us that one of the things God hates is "one who sows discord among brothers." (Proverbs 6:19)
That's sobering.
Because every critical word has the potential to weaken what God is trying to build.
Satan has always understood that a divided church is a distracted church.
When believers spend their energy criticizing one another, they're no longer focused on loving one another or reaching a world that desperately needs Christ.
Unity doesn't mean we all think exactly alike.
It means we love one another deeply enough to recognize that God is at work in places that may not look exactly like our own.
No Gallbladders
I've never forgotten what my surgeon told me.
My gallbladder wasn't essential.
But according to God...
there are no gallbladders in the body of Christ.
Every believer has been intentionally placed by God.
Every spiritual gift matters.
Every act of faithful service counts.
Every member is needed.
What would happen if we stopped comparing?
Stopped criticizing?
Stopped assuming our way was the only way?
What if we simply celebrated the beautiful variety God has woven into His Church?
After all...
a healthy body needs every part.
