“I wait for the Lord; I wait and put my hope in His word. I wait for the Lord more than a watchman for the morning—more than a watchman for the morning. Israel, put your hope in the Lord. For there is faithful love with the Lord, and with Him is redemption in abundance.” — Psalm 130:5–7, CSB
Nothing seems to expose the cracks in my faith quite like having to wait.
Waiting for God to give me direction about a big life change. Waiting for a relationship to be restored. Waiting for a call from the doctor's office.
Different circumstances, but the same struggle.
I want answers. I want resolution. I want to know what's coming so I can finally stop worrying about what might happen.
And if I'm being honest, I sometimes convince myself that if I could just get the answer I've been waiting for, then I could finally have peace.
Have you ever found yourself doing the same thing?
We tell ourselves that once we know how things will turn out, we can breathe again. Once the situation is resolved, we can stop worrying. Once we have some direction, we can move forward with confidence.
But what happens when the answer doesn't come?
What happens when the waiting stretches on longer than we expected and we're left with nothing but questions?
Waiting Has a Way of Revealing Our Hearts
I think one of the hardest things about waiting is that it forces us to confront how little control we actually have.
We can't make a relationship heal on our timeline. We can't force a door to open when God hasn't made the next step clear. And we certainly can't speed up the clock when we're waiting for news that could change everything.
So we wait.
But waiting doesn't always look like the peaceful, faith-filled picture we might imagine.
Sometimes it looks like checking our phones for the tenth time. Replaying conversations in our minds. Imagining every possible outcome and trying to prepare ourselves for all of them.
Sometimes it looks like praying about the same thing over and over, only to find ourselves worrying about it again five minutes later.
I know because I've done it.
And while there's nothing wrong with asking God for answers or bringing our concerns to Him, I've had to recognize how often my peace depends on getting the answer I want.
I say I trust God, but my anxiety reveals how desperately I want to know what He's going to do.
I say my hope is in Him, but sometimes I'm really placing my hope in a particular outcome.
And those aren't the same thing.
Where Is Your Hope While You Wait?
Psalm 130 gives us a beautiful picture of what it means to wait on the Lord.
The psalmist writes, “I wait for the Lord; I wait and put my hope in His word.”
Notice that he doesn't say he hopes for a quick answer. He doesn't say he hopes the circumstances will turn out the way he wants.
He puts his hope in God's Word.
Then he compares his waiting to that of a watchman waiting for the morning.
Imagine standing watch through the darkest hours of the night. You can't make the sun rise any sooner and you can't see everything that might be lurking in the darkness. All you can do is keep watch and wait for the light to come.
But the watchman isn't waiting without reason. Morning is coming!
The psalmist repeats the comparison to emphasize the intensity of his longing. He is waiting with expectation, looking to the Lord as the One in whom his hope rests.
And then he reminds Israel why they can put their hope in God:
“For there is faithful love with the Lord, and with Him is redemption in abundance.”
Did you catch that?
Our hope isn't anchored in how quickly God answers, how clearly He directs us, or whether our circumstances change the way we want them to.
Our hope is anchored in who God is.
He is faithful. His love doesn't run out when our patience does. His goodness isn't diminished by our uncertainty. And His ability to redeem isn't limited by the circumstances that leave us feeling stuck.
We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we know the One who holds tomorrow.
You Don't Have to Wait for an Answer to Have Hope
I think this is where I sometimes get waiting wrong.
I want God to resolve my situation so I can finally feel secure. I want Him to show me the next step so I can stop feeling uncertain. I want Him to give me a glimpse of the outcome so I can relax.
But God never intended for my circumstances to be the foundation of my security.
If my peace depends on everything working out the way I want it to, then my peace will always be fragile. There will always be another unanswered question, another uncertain outcome, or another situation I can't control.
And even when one season of waiting ends, another will eventually begin.
That's just part of living in a world where we don't know what tomorrow holds.
But as believers, we have something far more dependable than the certainty we keep searching for.
We have a God whose character doesn't change with our circumstances.
That doesn't mean waiting will suddenly feel easy. It doesn't mean we won't experience anxiety or have moments when our faith feels shaky. It means we have somewhere to turn when those feelings come.
We can bring our fears to God instead of letting them run unchecked through our minds. We can return to His Word when our thoughts begin telling us the worst is going to happen. And we can remind ourselves of His faithfulness even when we can't yet see what He's doing.
We can keep putting our hope in Him, one day at a time.
How We Wait Matters
I don't know what you're waiting for right now.
Maybe you're waiting for God to make the next step clear. Maybe you're praying for someone you love and wondering if things will ever change. Maybe you're facing a medical uncertainty that has left you feeling vulnerable and afraid.
I don't want to minimize how hard those things can be. Waiting can be exhausting, especially when the outcome matters deeply to us.
But I want to encourage you to pay attention to where you're placing your hope while you wait.
Are you believing that peace will finally come once you get the answer? Or are you learning to find your security in the One who loves you and remains faithful regardless of the answer?
There's a difference.
We can spend our waiting seasons consumed by what might happen or we can use them to grow in our trust of the One who already knows.
We can allow uncertainty to convince us that we're on our own or we can remind ourselves that God has not stopped being faithful simply because we don't understand what He's doing.
The circumstances we're waiting on may change tomorrow, next month, or much later than we hoped.
But God's character isn't on hold while we wait.
So let's stop waiting for our circumstances to give us a reason to hope.
Let's put our hope in His Word. Let's anchor our security in His faithful love. And let's remember that even when we can't see what's ahead, we can trust the One who does.
Because how we wait matters.
And the God we're waiting on is faithful.
